John S. Clarke Elementary School is the grade K-4 building for Pottsville Area School District located in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Pottsville is the County Seat for Schuylkill County and is located in the heart of Central Pennsylvania. Coal mining and coal related industry was the main economy for the area, which is rich in history and tradition. One historic business is Yuengling Brewery, the oldest brewery in the United States, and has been in continuous operation since 1829.
As coal declined, the community evolved into a light manufacturing and service industry economy. The John S. Clarke Building was originally a shirt factory and was purchased by the School District from Van-Heusen to expand the existing campus-like setting. The building was named for the then Pottsville Area School Board President, John S. Clarke.
Pictured in front of the building with a recently purchased school sign are Mrs. Paula J. Ney, Principal, and Mrs. Valerie Shappell, PTO President. The PTO is responsible for the fund raiser every year, and funds a number of areas to enhance education for the 1,100 students in the building, including study trips, assemblies, educational materials, and additional computer equipment for the classrooms. Several years ago the PTO completed a long-term project with the purchase and installation of new playground equipment. Always keeping an eye on the future, they are working toward the playground expansion.
The PTO has partnered with Cherrydale Farms for fund raising since the early 90's, but used another fund raising company from the fall of 1998 through 2000. The fall of 2001 found Cherrydale and the PTO once again in partnership, and the response from the parents and community was wonderful!
